Actually, it was a caterpillar. Poor thing. After I transferred all the wet clothes into the dryer I saw something suspicious at the bottom of the washing machine. Knowing Sarah's latest interest--"I love worms the best!"--I wisely used the tangerine peel that had also missed my pocket scrutiny to pick it up. I felt a twinge of remorse. It was a load of whites, so it is possible the caterpillar had been an unlucky sock stowaway, but unlikely. I know as a young child I senselessly pulled the legs off of daddy long-legs, not out of cruelty, more out of innocent fascination. I didn't connect the creature in my hand to any form of life that I knew. As an adult I should be more accountable for how I treat small creatures--from now on I suppose my pre-washing routine will have the added step of de-bugging. *sigh*
